The history of the Marc Cain company

The name Marc Cain came from one of Schlotterer’s industry peer, who was Canadian. Schlotterer chose this name, as it has a nice international sound to it. With the permission of his colleague, of course. Schlotterer began producing his designs in Italy. It was a very adventurous beginning; with little start capital and only an air mattress to sleep on, Schlotterer travelled around Italy in search of suitable production sites. He actually wanted to stay in Italy forever, but when his father’s knitwear company was threatened with bankruptcy, he relocated a part of the production operations to the Swabian province. With innovative machinery, he produced modern patterns and fabrics that reflected the zeitgeist. Unlike many other companies, the Marc Cain company’s manufacturing facilities aren’t located in another country; they are still in Germany. The brand’s yarn is produced in Italy, so that even in Bodenhausen in Swabia, you can still find the Italian flair.
